The Incredible Living Stone

As you look at the photo to the left, it's not hard to understand why this succulent is called a "Living Stone". Originally discovered by John Burchell in 1811 when he picked up a curiously shaped pebble, it turned out to be a plant and since then have been avidly sought by the collector of succulent plants. It is a genus of succulent plants native to Africa, mainly in vast dry regions of Namibia and South Africa. It is especially characteristic of the Karoo region at Africa's southern tip. "Lithos" means "stone" and "opsis" means "face" in Ancient Greek; therefore, "Lithops" means "stone-face". |
Found in Southern Africa, they are a true succulent and grow in very dry regions of that area. They are an extremely easy plant to grow, a good first plant for a child. You will soon become addicted to them and want more and more! When we say easy, we mean easy! They require watering once a month or so. They tolerate neglect very well and require almost no care! |

The only problem we have found is that most people tend to over water and they rot them. They go dormant in the colder months and again in the hot summer months. During those periods, watering is held back even longer, as much as 6 weeks or more between watering is just fine! Some owners even let them begin to shrivel a little, as a sign that it's time to water, and they perk right back! |
